2007 Word of the Year: ‘Locavore’

From PRNewswire:

The “locavore” movement encourages consumers to buy from farmers’ markets or even to grow or pick their own food, arguing that fresh, local products are more nutritious and taste better. Locavores also shun supermarket offerings as an environmentally friendly measure, since shipping food over long distances often requires more fuel for transportation.

Runners up include:

  • bacn - email you want to read, just now now
  • cloudware - online apps powered by large data storage facilities
  • cougar - older woman who pursues younger men
  • tase - to stun with a taser
I was tased to discover that, while catching up on my bacn reading through gmail (one of the more popular examples of cloudware), 9 out of 10 cougars prefer locavores over guys who pay no attention to where their food is grown.
